Indian Wells: Nadal, Federer Cruise into Quarterfinals

Roger Federer during his fourth round match as he defeated Kyle Edmund in the BNP Paribas Open at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden

At the tournament in the United States, which is a Masters 1000 event and widely considered as one of the biggest events outside of the four Grand Slams, 37-year-old Federer eased through with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Great Britain's Kyle Edmund. "That's where I got my good feeling and my good tennis and also the good physical health back".

"I think I can speak on behalf of all the players, it's always such a pleasure when the legends come out to watch the current generation play".

What was unexpected was a piece of honesty.

"He didn't have the best start, so that cost him the first set".

"The Rocket and the Pistol".

"I'm going to get a ticket because this is just nice", he said, joking about buying a lottery ticket.

Federer's simple victory over Edmund was not to be taken lightly, even if it only took 63 minutes.

Federer was on later in the afternoon against Indian Wells challenger victor Kyle Edmund.

Three-time champion Nadal crushed Filip Krajinovic of Serbia 6-3, 6-4, while five-time champion Federer defeated Kyle Edmund of the United Kingdom 6-1, 6-4.

After a day of upsets which saw both world number ones, Novak Djokovic and Naomi Osaka, exit the singles, things went largely to plan at the Indian Wells Masters in California today.

"The difference between players is not huge. It's small gaps", Nadal said about the upsets.

"It's true that for the last 10 years didn't happen very often".

Federer will fight for a semi-final berth against 22-year-old Pole Hubert Hurkacz.

Nadal commented "I probably played a little bit worse today than yesterday", adding "but in general terms [it's] been a positive victory again".

He will next take on 13th-ranked Russian Karen Khachanov, who beat world No. 9 John Isner 6-4, 7-6 (7/1).

"It will be amusing that somebody other than Novak is still in", Kecmanovic said of top-ranked Djokovic, his famous countryman who was upset on Tuesday.

Kecmanovic got into the main draw when world No.6 Kevin Anderson withdrew before his opening match with an elbow injury.

2016 finalist Milos Raonic kept his hopes of returning to a fourth Indian Wells semifinal by upending Jan-Lennard Struff 6-4, 6-3.

The top-seeded Serb, who had not dropped a set in four matches since the round of 16 at the Australian Open in January, looked out-of-sorts throughout the 98-minute contest.
