After being fired by Disney in July for decade-old inappropriate tweets, filmmaker James Gunn has been rehired to write and direct the third installment of the "Guardians of the Galaxy" franchise for Marvel. He will then move onto Guardians once he completes work on the DC supervillain team-up. Horn reversed his decision to fire Gunn after the director's public apology and handling of the entire situation thereafter.

Friday on Twitter, Gunn expressed his gratitude to fans. If you'll recall, Gunn was forced to vacate his seat when Internet hounds discovered a bunch of controversial Tweets assigned to his name. Disney Studios president Alan Horn was persuaded by Gunn's public apology and his handling of the situation and made a decision to reverse course to reinstate him, according to Deadline.

What About James Gunn and Suicide Squad? "Although I don't support James Gunn's inappropriate jokes from years ago, he is a good man", Pratt said. I deeply appreciate Disney's decision and I am excited to continue making films that investigate the ties of love that bind us all. "Love to you all". "I am always learning and will continue to work at being the best human being I can be", Gunn wrote in a statement posted to Twitter. "My days saying something just because it's shocking and trying to get a reaction are over".

After he was sacked as director, Gunn's next project became writing and directing The Suicide Squad, starring Idris Elba, for Warner Bros. and DC. The horror film he produced, Brightburn, releases on May 24.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is expected to star Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Elizabeth Debicki, and Sean Gunn.

The first two Guardians films have made a combined $1.63 billion at the box office worldwide, spawned two spin-off attractions at Disney's theme parks, and even influenced Marvel Comics to change the original comic characters to more closely align with the versions from the movies.
