Mafia boss slain outside NY home in grisly hit

Affluent neighbourhood Police near Cali’s home in the Todt Hill area of Staten Island

The last crime family boss to be shot in NY was Paul Castellano, who was also a Gambino crime boss.

His murder is the first of a NY mob boss since Paul Castellano was famously assassinated at Sparks Steakhouse in 1985.

The 53-year-old with deep ties to Sicilian organized crime factions - thought to have been leading the Gambinos since 2015, wielding influence both stateside and in Italy - suffered "multiple gunshot wounds to the torso" in the attack on Wednesday evening, police said. He was pronounced dead after being taken to Staten Island University Hospital.

Police said surveillance video captures the shooter, and the pick-up believed to be the getaway truck.

Cali was sentenced to 16 months in prison and was released in 2009.

Charges against members of Mafia operations, including Gambino family operatives, have included murder, loan sharking, gambling and illegal drug distribution, Reuters has reported. Gotti took over the crime organization; he died of cancer, in prison, in 2002.

Late Wednesday night, in a scene that could have been pulled from a Godfather movie, Gambino crime family leader Frank "Franky Boy" Cali was gunned down outside his Staten Island home.

Cali was not only shot several times, his killers even ran over him with their vehicle, according to the New York Post.

"The Gambino crime family during Castellano's reign was the largest criminal organization in the US, with law enforcement estimating it had some 250 "'made" members" and "more than 550 lower-ranking "associate' members".

Aggressive federal prosecutions in the past 25 years have decimated the ranks of New York's five Mafia families.

His killing, after a spate of hits on lower-level gangsters, reignites memories of vicious turf wars as mafiosi fought for supremacy in NY.

It wasn't the first such spattering of gore in recent years, however. As prosecutors tried and failed to bring him down, he came to be called the Teflon Don.

Last October, Bonanno crime family associate Sylvester Zottola, 71, was gunned down at a Bronx McDonald's drive-thru as he waited for a coffee.

He then allegedly returned to the scene of the crime hours later to grieve with the older man's family.
