Man in custody, being questioned in killing of Gambino family mob boss

Francesco Cali 53 was shot multiple times in front of his home on Hilltop Terrace on Wednesday

A suspect is in custody in the shooting death of the reputed Gambino crime family boss, according to city police.

Police apprehended Anthony Comello in New Jersey on Saturday and expect to charge him with murdering Cali, the New York Police Department's Chief of Detectives Dermot Shea told a news conference. "We are at the beginning stages of this investigation", Shea said. "Were others conspiring to do this crime?" The suspect shot Cali as many as 10 times, Shea said.

When asked about the suspect's arrest record, Shea said he "crossed paths in some limited circumstances with the NYPD", including getting a parking ticket on Staten Island the day Cali was killed.

Police are still investigating the motive behind Cali's murder, he said, including whether it might have been a domestic altercation or a mob-related killing.

The suspect was arrested by the New York/New Jersey Regional Fugitive Task Force of the U.S. Marshal's Service, a New York source said. An assistant DA there referred a reporter to the office's public information officer, who was not immediately available.

Experts say Cali, a native of the Italian island Sicily, rose quickly in the Gambino family - serving in the organization's ruling panel for years before replacing Domenico Cefalu in 2015.

His only mob-related criminal conviction came a decade ago, when Cali pleaded guilty in an extortion conspiracy involving a failed attempt to build a NASCAR track on Staten Island.

Cali was the first NY crime family boss shot since 1985, when Paul Castellano, who owned a mansion on Todt Hill, was executed as he arrived at Sparks Steakhouse in Manhattan.
