Over a 1000 flights cancelled due to ‘Bomb Cyclone’ in US

A man in a bulldozer clears snow drifts left by a bomb cyclone on Thursday

In 48 hours, the freak storm, called a "bomb cyclone", has affected some 100 million Americans, the U.S. National Weather Service (NWS) estimated Friday.

The winter storm has been linked to at least one death.

The Red Cross reported Thursday that 620 people had stayed in shelters overnight in Colorado and in Wyoming, where the state Transportation Department reported snow drifts on Interstate 80 that were as high as 10 feet (3 meters). Daniel Groves, 52, died on Interstate 76 after being struck by a Volvo whose driver lost control. Groves had gotten out of his patrol auto to check on another vehicle that had slid off the road, police said. People have been told that if possible, do not get out of the house. The National Weather Service has issued a warning to the people of Colorado, Wyoming, Nebraska and North-South Dakota. The National Weather Service is calling the storm "a Great Plains cyclone of historic proportions".

Parts of seven states were under blizzard warnings, and 20 states were under some level of high wind alert, Carbin said.

Runways were cleared, the lights came back on and stranded motorists and airline passengers were back on the move on Thursday as the blizzard that pounded the U.S. Rocky Mountain and Plains states shoves eastward and fizzled to rain.

Around midday, Sioux Falls' precipitation was expected to turn from rain to snow - which has already brought perilous conditions to the western part of the state. She had tried to make the trip Wednesday but the interstate was shut down due to a pileup - one she thinks she narrowly avoided.

Heavy rain caused flooding in eastern parts of South Dakota and Nebraska, as well as in Iowa, where all or part of nine state parks were closed due to rising flood waters. "The best place to be is at home and off the roads".

Colorado Department of Transportation now has Interstate 70 reopened after the bomb cyclone on Thursday
"Bomb cyclone" headed our way, and here's what it means

The massive late-winter storm hit Colorado on Wednesday, causing widespread power outages, forcing the cancellation of hundreds of flights and wreaking havoc on roadways. City of Lone Tree, Colo. Kim Reynolds declared a state of emergency. The state says shelters are now providing aid to more than 100 people who were forced to evacuate their homes, with shelters open in parts of Nebraska, Iowa and Kansas.

A system is said to rapidly intensify if the pressure drops 24 mb in 24 hours. That's what happened in parts of the central USA, where just one day before blizzard conditions hit, many areas such as Denver were enjoying sunny weather in the 50s and 60s.

The current bomb cyclone also whacked part of Texas - including in Amarillo, where high winds shoved a semitruck off a highway Wednesday.

Winds of more than 100 miles per hour have slammed into San Augustin Pass, New Mexico, and Pine Springs, Texas.

Areas to the east and south of the bomb cyclone are also facing challenging weather Thursday - with the official start of spring less than a week away. Although Colorado saw the bomb cyclone manifest itself in the form of snow, rain is the main culprit in Iowa and IL.

"There's still a good threat of thunderstorms in Louisiana, Mississippi and up into the Great Lakes region as the system pushes into Canada, but it's not like it was", he said.
