Forty people were killed and more than 20 seriously wounded in shootings at two mosques in New Zealand on Friday, in what Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said was a terrorist attack.

About two hours into the incident, police confirmed that a suspect was in custody, but said that more people involved in the attacks may be out there.

Forty-one people were killed at the Al Noor mosque, seven at a mosque in the Linwood neighborhood and one died in hospital, police said.

"People living in this peaceful country of Canada, they should feel safe and it should not stop them coming to the mosque".

The shootings happened in Christchurch, New Zealand, on Friday. "I thought I'm gone as well". He has not been publicly identified by officials.

Many experts who track violent extremists have identified white nationalism as a growing threat in the United States and overseas.

The Muslim-hating New Zealand mosque shooter carried out the heinous attack using five guns that were obtained legally, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said a day after the massacre.

Norwegian Prime Minister Erna Solberg said the attack brought back memories of 2011, when anti-Muslim extremist Anders Breivik killed 77 people at a youth gathering on a Norwegian island: "It shows that extremism is nurtured and that it lives in many places".

"That just broke me", she said. "The person who has committed this violent act has no place here". "And those values, I can assure you, will not, and cannot, be shaken by this attack".

New Zealand does not ban semi-automatic firearms, unlike Australia and the U.K. (Norway will follow suit in 2021.) And while New Zealand gun owners are required to obtain a license and complete a gun safety course, they do not have to register their guns, with some exceptions, making it impossible for police to know the exact number of firearms in the country. "Our city has changed forever today", Mayor Lianne Dalziel said in a statement.

In 2017, New Zealand again tried to add restrictions, but the majority of the recommendations were declined.

Riyaz Khawaja, president of the Hussaini Association of Calgary, was at his mosque for an evening event on Thursday when news broke of the attacks in New Zealand. "We are not aware of other people, but we can not assume there are not others at large", he said. While the graphic video was removed from Facebook, it spread all across social media.

And Alberta Liberal Leader David Khan said in a statement he was shocked and horrified by the attacks, calling them "an assault on humanity throughout the world". In a statement, according to The Associated Press, Facebook New Zealand spokeswoman Mia Garlick said that the company is "also removing any praise or support for the crime and the shooter or shooters as soon as we're aware".

People pay their respects at the memorial service held at the Port Arthur historic site for the 35 victims of the Port Arthur massacre, May 19, 1996. A 28-year-old man was later charged with murder and will appear in court on Saturday morning local time. "So that's why we're asking everyone rather than doing that, if you can come together and cry on each other's shoulders, maybe the burden of grief might lessen a little bit".

This is a developing story.

Members of the touring Bangladesh cricket team were reportedly among those fleeing one of the mosques after their bus drove past the scene and was stopped by police.
