Senate Passes War Powers Resolution to End Complicity in Yemen War

The Latest: Senate votes to end US support of Yemen war

Defying a White House veto threat, the U.S. Senate voted 54-46 Wednesday on ending U.S. support for the Saudi Arabian-led coalition fighting in Yemen.

Backers of the resolution, including a handful of Trump's fellow Republicans as well as Democrats, argued that USA involvement in Yemen violates the constitutional requirement that Congress, not the president, should determine when the country goes to war.

Opponents argued that the War Powers Resolution does not apply because the U.S.is not directly involved in combat in Yemen.

Mr Trump has vowed to veto the resolution should it pass through the Democrat-led Congress. In an attempt to "halt American military involvement in a foreign conflict", this is the first time the decade-old War Powers Resolution was invoked.

Passage of theresolutioncomes as the Saudis continue to launch deadly airstrikes in Yemen with US backing, worsening a crisis that has already resulted in mass suffering andtens of thousands of deaths.

Mr Sanders, who is running for the Democratic nomination for President in 2020, called the Yemen war "harmful to our national security and the security of the region". Mike Lee, R- Utah.

Trump's support for Saudi Arabia has been a point of tension with Congress since the killing of USA -based journalist Jamal Khashoggi past year.

The World Health Organization says about 10,000 people have been killed in the war between forces loyal to the Yemeni government, backed by the Saudi-led coalition, and the Iran-aligned Houthi rebels.

The Senate passed a similar resolution a year ago in the wake of the Khashoggi murder, but it did not receive a vote in the GOP-led House.

"The United States should end its involvement in the Saudi-led war in Yemen that has resulted in widespread starvation, disease, and death", Blumenthal said. Lawmakers from both parties have called for a reappraisal of the U.S. -Saudi relationship and accused Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in Khashoggi's murder, even as Trump has stood by him.

"By defining "hostilities" to include defense cooperation such as aerial refueling", the statement said, the Yemen resolution could also "establish bad precedent for future legislation".

US Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT) recently told Washington-based publication The Hill that the vote could be "tight", but that the measure would be able to gain the required amount of vote to pass.

"We need to stay engaged with the limited engagement that we have", said Senator Jim Risch, the Republican chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee.

The Senate is poised to vote Wednesday on ending US support for the Saudi Arabian-led coalition fighting in Yemen, legislation the White House has threatened to veto. "We should instead signal our resolve that the U.S.is committed to playing an important role in pushing for a sustainable political settlement in Yemen".

On Thursday, the Senate is expected to vote on a resolution - already passed by the House - to reverse Trump's emergency declaration on border security, after the president went around Congress in a bid to secure more funding for his wall between the United States and Mexico.
