Test for HIV when you are pregnant - Aisha Buhari to Nigerian women

President Muhammadu Buhari

Before the commencement of the survey, about three million Nigerians were estimated to be living with HIV and about 1.1 million of them now receiving treatment.

Isaac Adewole, made the new ranking known yesterday at the official announcement of the result of the NAIIS at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

According to the report, the number of women living with HIV/AIDS is double the number of men living with the virus.

He directed NACA and the Federal Ministry of Health to undertake detailed consultations and consensus building with key sectoral Ministries, the legislature, governors of high prevalence states, development partners and civil society to chart a new strategic path, building on the results of the survey.

"The Nigeria National HIV/AIDS Indicator and Impact Survey (NAIIS) findings provide Nigeria with an accurate national HIV prevalence measure of 1.4%".

The survey presented for each geopolitical zone in the country for prevalence among persons age 15-64 years reads: North Central 2.1 per cent; North East 1.1 per cent; North West 0.6 per cent; South East 1.9 per cent; South-South 3.1 per cent, and South West 1.2 per cent.

Latest statistics by the Nigerian HIV/AIDs Indicator and Impact Survey (NAIIS) has indicated that about 1.9 million Nigerians are living with HIV/AIDS in the country. The NAIIS directly measured HIV prevalence and viral load suppression and was primarily funded by the U.S. President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR).

" Your Excellency, this appointment is not only to help the UNAIDS in advocacy, but to assist in scaling up the campaign against mother to child transmission of HIV as well as the Promotion of Treatment for Children Living with HIV in Nigeria, " he said.

"Today is a critical turning point in Nigeria for an HIV epidemic that has killed many of our countrymen and women".

He said the federal government was determined to progressively add 50,000 Nigerians on treatment of the virus every year using government resources. "Everyone infected with HIV needs to get treatment so they can achieve viral suppression, especially pregnant women".

"An estimated 1.9 million Nigerians are now living with HIV with about one million persons on treatment".

The event is being organized by the Minister of Health and the National Agency for the Control of Aids.

He called for concerted effort to stop HIV in Nigeria, as he noted "if we don't stop HIV in Nigeria, we will never have a generation free of HIV in Africa".

The survey, which is the largest in the world reached around 220,000 people in about 100,000 households and was conducted between July and December 2018.
