New Zealand mosque shooting: At least 49 killed after gunmen open fire

An Australian man has been charged with murder over the massacre of 49 people at two mosques in Christchurch on Friday.

He appeared in court in white prison clothing, handcuffed and barefoot. A raft of further charges are expected.

He did not speak, but was looking around particularly at the media present.

He did not request bail and was taken into custody until his next court appearance scheduled for April 5.

Social media platforms Facebook and Twitter said on Friday they would take down content involving mass shootings at two New Zealand mosques that killed at least 49 people and wounded more than 20.

Two improvised explosive devices (IEDs) were found in a auto and neutralized by the military, while police raided a home in Dunedin, where Ardern said the suspect was based.

Forty-two people are still being treated in hospital for injuries, including a four-year-old child, New Zealand health authorities said.

Wounds range from minor to critical, they said.

A man who claimed responsibility for the shootings left a manifesto, saying he was a racist who had been planning the attack for two years.

TRT World's Jacob Brown explains.

Relief groups like the New Zealand Red Cross are already helping the community register missing persons, connect with loved ones, or mark themselves safe.

Police later said one of the arrests didn't relate to the shootings.

New Zealand's Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said New Zealand had been placed on its highest security threat level.

"It is clear that this can now only be described as a terrorist attack", Ardern said earlier on Friday, noting that numerous victims could be migrants or refugees.

Alphabet Inc's YouTube said: "Please know we are working vigilantly to remove any violent footage".

About 41 people were killed at the Masjid Al Noor mosque in central Christchurch at about 1:45 pm [local time], and the rest were killed in a second shooting at the Linwood Masjid Mosque.

The UK stands ready to support New Zealand however we can.

A 17-minute video appeared online, taken from a helmet camera showed a shooter in his auto, arming himself, getting out of the vehicle and entering the mosque where he started shooting.

He had livestreamed the shooting on Facebook. They have chosen to make New Zealand their home, and it is their home. "The horrific active shooter scenario at a mosque is something we all pray never happens (but) there is no active intelligence that there is any immediate threat in the U.S. But we can not be complacent".

Earlier, New Zealand police commissioner Mike Bush said Tarrant had been charged with one count of murder, with other charges to follow. The man burst into the mosque as worshippers were kneeling for prayers.

"Horrified to hear of Christchurch mosque shootings".

Prosecutors in Bulgaria launched a probe into a recent visit to the country by the terrorist behind the attack. He said he and others escaped by breaking through a glass door.

The attack shocked the local Muslim population, many of whom had come to New Zealand as refugees.

Christchurch, a relatively small city on New Zealand's south island, hit global headlines in 2011 when it was struck by a deadly natural disaster, killing more than 180 people.
