Trump Vetoes Congressional Effort To Limit Border Wall Funding

U.S. President Donald Trump holds up his veto of the congressional resolution to end his emergency declaration to get funds to build a border wall after signing it in the Oval Office of the White House in Washington U.S

President Trump issued the first veto of his presidency, striking down a resolution that would have terminated his national emergency declaration diverting funding to build the wall.

The president tweets that he looks forward to vetoing the Senate resolution that would increase "crime, drugs and trafficking"; Kevin Corke reports from the White House.

In the Oval Office at the White House on Friday afternoon, Trump said "our immigration system is stretched beyond the breaking point" and called the congressional action "dangerous" and "reckless".

Trump had telegraphed his plan to proceed with additional wall spending on Thursday, minutes after the Senate voted 59-41 to block it.

It is not believed there are enough votes to override the president's veto, which would require a two-thirds majority in both chambers. The House previously passed the resolution last month, 245 (including 13 Republicans) to 182.

In declaring an emergency on February 15, Trump cited drug smuggling across the border from Mexico (misleading), the drop in crime in El Paso, Texas, after a partial border barricade was built there (not true) and reports of women kidnapped, bound with tape and trafficked into the United States across unguarded sections of the border (no evidence exists of this).

Alexander added that he shares the president's goal of border security, but warned allowing Trump to redirect money without authorization could set a risky precedent.

"This is a constitutional question, it's a question of the balance of power that is core to our constitution", Sen.

Trump thanked Republican senators who voted for his declaration in a Twitter post earlier on Friday. Mitt Romney, R-Utah, told reporters. Mike Lee, R-Utah; Rob Portman, R-Ohio; Susan Collins, R-Maine; Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska; Marco Rubio, R-Fla.; Rand Paul, R-Ky.; Lamar Alexander, R-Tenn.; Roger Wicker, R-Miss.; Roy Blunt, R-Mo.; Jerry Moran, R-Kan.; and Pat Toomey, R-Pa. Twelve Senate Republicans sided with Democrats on the issue. The emergency declaration allows the president to redirect funds from other accounts such as military construction to the Southern border wall. But after Trump said he opposed that legislation, Lee eventually backed the measure to rebuff Trump.
