Whoopi Goldberg makes surprise 'View' appearance after near-death experience

"This is my first foray out, I'm not there yet, I know that, but the only way it's gonna get better is if I begin, so this is my beginning", she explained, still coughing.

Goldberg became the moderator and co-host on The View in 2007, when she replaced Rosie O'Donnell. "I really kind of missed y'all".

Goldberg said it was her first "foray" out but that she is still dealing with remnants of her illness. "If the doctor says this is what you need, I feel like you should listen to the doctor", Goldberg said.

Behar previously told viewers about Goldberg's diagnosis during the February 20 broadcast while simultaneously debunking rumors that Goldberg would be the surprise host of the Oscars, which were just a few days away at that point. "If you do the machine and you do this breathing thing, you won't have to get this operation", she said. "That's how it was". "That was like, uh, no, actually I hadn't thought of it. Prognosis is I'm not supposed to be here but I got permission". "One of the things I discovered, your insurance really doesn't do much for you", Goldberg said.

Goldberg stuck around for several minutes to talk about her health and how hard it was to deal with insurance - something she hopes a freshman member of Congress will take up as an issue. "You think you can push through because you've got a little cold. Well, it can", she said.

Earlier this month, Goldberg appeared on The View via a video message to give an update on her health.

"Sixty years of insurance money and you're telling me I can't get this machine?" she continued.

"I came very close to leaving the earth", she admitted.

This is a breaking news story.

"Thank you for all of your good wishes, all of the wonderful things people have bee saying".

"I think doctors should not be on insurance boards".

"She's not feeling well", Behar said during the broadcast.

Behar said the hosts had no idea Whoopi was showing up, adding, "We are shocked, personally". "She's not even well enough to host this show right now, let alone the Oscars".

The View airs weekdays at 11 a.m. ET on ABC.
