Woman awarded $29m in damages in Johnson & Johnson cancer case

US Johnson & Johnson asked to pay $29 million to cancer patient who used its talcum powder

J&J cited "serious procedural and evidentiary errors" in the course of the trial, but the company did not provide further details of the alleged errors.

The company is now fighting two asbestos-related lawsuits in New Jersey and Oklahoma courts, and two more trials could begin this month, the UBS analysts said.

This lawsuit is one of over 13,000 that Johnson & Johnson is now facing over its talc baby powder. A judge awarded plaintiffs claiming that the baby powder caused cancer $4.7 billion in July.

J&J, which has steadfastly denied its baby powder is contaminated with asbestos, still faces more than 13,000 lawsuits claiming its 135-year-old baby powder line caused mesothelioma and ovarian cancer. This suit is the first to go to trial since December articles by Reuters and The New York Times alleged the company feared for years that its baby powder might contain asbestos. It has more than two dozen trials scheduled around the United States this year.

A jury in California has ruled that Johnson & Johnson must pay $29 million to a woman who claimed its baby powder gave her terminal cancer.

"This track record shows that there are one set of facts in these cases, and that decades of tests by independent, non-litigation driven experts and institutions repeatedly confirm that Johnson's Baby Powder does not contain asbestos or cause cancer", the company said. "We respect the legal process and reiterate that jury verdicts are not medical, scientific or regulatory conclusions about a product", the company said. "We believe these issues will warrant a reversal on appeal".

The company said in a statement, shared with PEOPLE, that they plan to appeal the ruling. "The internal J&J documents that the jury saw, once more laid bare the shocking truth of decades of cover-up, deception and concealment by J&J".

A few weeks ago, sources told Reuters that India's CDCSO had failed to find traces of asbestos in J&J's talcum powder.

"'They knew there was asbestos in it, and for me that's the worst part because they failed to warn the consumer", said Kate Alessandri, an Oakland librarian.

In December, the New York Times reported that for years, Johnson & Johnson executives anxious that their talc-based products would one day be linked to asbestos.

Another juror, Anu Agarwal, a product manager in Castro Valley, said J&J was irresponsible for failing to adequately follow up on studies that showed the presence of asbestos in Baby Powder.
