At least two killed in Nepal airplane crash near Mt. Everest

Hospital officials get ready to unload from a helicopter the dead bodies of plane crash victims outside the Teaching Hospital in Kathmandu Nepal Sunday

Three people have died, and four others have been left injured after two planes crashed into each other near Mt Everest.

The Summir Air plane was reportedly en route to Kathmandu from Lukla.

The Twin Otter aircraft crashed into the helicopter at Tenzing Hillary Airport at Lukla, known as the gateway to the world's highest mountain, 125 km (78 miles) northeast of capital Kathmandu.

Tribhuvan International Airport spokesperson Pratap Babu Tiwari said that S Dhungana, co-pilot of the plane, and Assistant Sub-Inspector Ram Bahadur Khadka, who was stationed at the helipad, were killed in the incident.

"We are not sure about the cause of the accident".

The other pilot from the plane and the helicopter pilot are among the injured - they were airlifted to Kathmandu.

Hospital officials prepare to unload the body of a plane crash victim outside the Teaching Hospital in Kathmandu, Nepal, Sunday, April 14, 2019.

Four of the passengers and a flight attendant on board the plane were safe, civil administrator Narendra Kumar Rama said. Both are private airline firms that cater to tourists and Nepalese in the country's remote areas.

Lukla airport is used by thousands of trekkers and climbers heading for the Everest region each year.

Tenzing-Hillary airport is often referred to as the world's most risky airport because of the short runway and hard approach.

The Tenzing-Hillary Airport sits at an elevation of just over 9,000 feet.
