Ecuador's president says Assange tried to use its embassy to spy

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange is seen as he leaves a police station in London Britain

"He first fled to the embassy to escape extradition to Sweden on rape charges - charges he denied", Oliver said.

Although Swedish authorities abandoned their case against Assange in 2017, supporters of WikiLeaks have long feared his possible extradition could ultimately involve his relocation to the United States, where he remains wanted over his role in the leaking of classified military and diplomatic cables from 2010 onward.

Footage from Russian state broadcaster Ruptly shows Julian Assange, heavily bearded, being forcibly removed from Ecuador's London embassy on Thursday.

Julian Assange repeatedly violated his asylum conditions and tried to use the Ecuadorian embassy in London as a "centre for spying", Ecuador's president has said in an interview with the Guardian.

"We can not allow our house, the house that opened its doors, to become a centre for spying", Mr Moreno has told the newspaper.

Security footage from inside Ecuador's embassy in London shows WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange try to skateboard through a small room.

Speaking to the Guardian, President Moreno claimed Ecuador's old government provided facilities within the embassy "to interfere" with other states.

Oliver then detailed Assange's alleged offenses within the embassy, including skateboarding in the hallways, damaging equipment and his cat making a mess.

He faces up to 12 months in jail in the United Kingdom over breaking bail conditions., and possible extradition to the U.S. over WikiLeaks' release of sensitive USA military documents.

In an interview with The Guardian, Moreno said Assange's actions "violate asylum conditions" and the country's decision to evict him was "not abitrary but based on worldwide law".

Assange's lawyer had earlier accused Ecuador of "outrageous allegations".

The president also made references to Assange's apparently poor hygiene following allegations made by Ecuador's interior minister, Maria Paula Romo.

Should Stockholm make a request to extradite Assange, the UK government will have to consider whether this should be done before or after that of the United States, where the 47-year-old is fighting a USA extradition warrant relating to the release by WikiLeaks of a huge cache of official documents.

"It's appalling, frankly, the way in which he's been treated and I'm really disappointed in the Ecuadorian authorities for removing the asylum..." Assange is being held at Belmarsh Prison in London and is now expected to fight extradition to the U.S. over an allegation that he conspired with former army intelligence analyst Chelsea Manning to break into a classified government computer.
