Find My Friends and Find My iPhone Could be Combined

Turn off Find My iPhone

There's no word yet on when this revamped app might be released but 9to5Mac speculates that the new app could be announced alongside Apple's 2019 iPhones in September.

Last night, 9to5Mac reported that Apple is working on an app - codenamed GreenTorch - that'll replace Find My iPhone and Find My Friends app with merged functionality.

The app will integrate both features into a new universal app framework - Marzipan. For the most part, the new service will work like the existing Find my iPhone and Friends apps. Apple is also building ability to track not just Apple devices but other objects as well in this app, using the company's now in development hardware product.

The app introduces a "Find Network" function to track a device even when it's not connected to WiFi or cellular network. Another new feature will be notifications when a friend or family member arrives at or leaves a specific location.

The tag will also store the contact information of its owner which can be read by any iPhone or iPad once it is put into "lost mode".

Apple has reportedly set its sights on Tile's tracking tags, following reports the iPhone manufacturer is developing a hardware companion for its "Find My iPhone" app. It will reportedly let you share your location with your family and friends, and you can request for your friends to share their locations with you.

The new gadget, which Apple could show off this fall, is similar to Tile's popular Bluetooth tracker. This device will be paired with a person's iCloud account by its proximity to an iPhone or AirPods. One of the bigger new features for the new app is the ability to track non-Apple items. If a device attached to a tag goes too far away from it, users will receive a notification on their device.

Apple has not yet released any official announcements about these products, but we might hear something at this year's WWDC in June.
