Fisher-Price recalls sleepers after more than 30 babies died

Rock 'n Play Sleeper by Fisher-Price

Fisher-Price has issued a recall on all Rock 'n Play Sleepers after reports of infant deaths.

A previous warning from Fisher-Price said that older babies that were not buckled into the sleeper had rolled over, fallen out of it and been killed.

Just last week, the CPSC and Fisher-Price issued a warning about the product, which retailed for $49 to $149 and was sold at several major retailers dating back to 2009.

On its website, the commission said at least 30 infants had died in the sleeper model since its 2009 release.

In response, Fisher-Price has issued a voluntary recall of the product and is advising consumers to stop using the Rock 'n Play Sleeper immediately.

The Consumer Reports analysis was published on April 8, just days after the CPSC issued a warning on the product imploring parents to stop using it once their children turned 3 months old or began exhibiting the ability to roll over - whichever came first. This is due to infants rolling over while unrestrained.

A Fisher-Price Rock 'n Play Sleeper. The product was manufactured in China. In an article this week, Consumer Reports found that some of the infants died from suffocation. "I am glad to see this product off the market and urge all parents to talk to their pediatricians about how to keep their babies safe during sleep time and any time".

The CPSC said parents should never add blankets, pillows, stuffed toys or other items to places where babies sleep - cribs, bassinets, play pens or inclined sleepers.

"Fisher-Price and the CPSC knew about deaths linked to this product for years and could have taken steps to avoid this unnecessary tragedy", Consumer Reports President Marta Tellado said in the statement. But given the number of deaths, and expert medical advice that babies should sleep on firm, flat surfaces, there were growing calls for the product to be recalled.

Following Friday's recall, Buerkle said the investigation into the sleepers had been a top priority for the commission and announced that officials will continue looking into other inclined sleep products.
