Galaxy Fold screens are reportedly breaking already for some early users

Samsung Galaxy A70 India

The Samsung Galaxy Fold is an ambitious foldable phone, but one with mounting durability problems, according to a handful of press who got early access to it. Steve Kovach of CNBC, Mark Gurman of Bloomberg, and Dieter Bohn of The Verge have reported major failures of their phones' display panels, just two days after receiving them.

Marques Brownlee (MKBHD)'s Samsung Galaxy Fold review unit seems to have been damaged by human error, as he claims to have been picking at the film that coats the Fold's screen. And it's especially disappointing since all three reviewers with broken screens only got their hands on the folding phone a few days ago. It's NOT a screen protector.

A couple of journalists say they removed a thin, protective layer from the screens that they thought was supposed to come off, but was meant to stay. But CNBC says it didn't remove the protective layer on its Galaxy Fold review unit, so that doesn't necessarily explain the other problems tech writers are running into.

As Gurman suggests, the outmost layer of plastic (plastic? plastic) is very easy to mistake as a remove-friendly screen protector. Stick around as we hear from Samsung about the issues going down today.

Samsung is offering a one-year warranty in most markets when you purchase the Fold, and at least it's not catching on fire yet. People were anxious about the durability of folding a display in half like this, and it looks like Steve Kovach of CNBC has experienced everyone's worst fear: his Galaxy Fold display broke right along the fold crease-all the pixels in the folding area went black and the screen started flickering like insane.

The Fold features a 20-part, dual-axis hinge that's created to open and close seamlessly with just a little bit of force. In his case, the pixels on the Samsung Galaxy Fold's display have been gradually turning black. We haven't seen any issues with the display during our testing. Then, prominent YouTuber and product reviewer Marques Brownlee apparently did the same thing. Samsung just started taking pre-orders for the Galaxy Fold last weekend, prior to a full retail launch on 26 April.
