M6.8 natural disaster strikes Indonesia's island of Sulawesi

Indonesia On Alert for Tsunami

A 6.8 magnitude natural disaster struck off the coast of Indonesia's Sulawesi island Friday, prompting tsunami warnings that were later lifted.

A 6.8 magnitude quake struck off the coast of Indonesia's Sulawesi island Friday evening.

The warning was in effect for about 40 minutes.

A 7.5-magnitude quake that hit the opposite side of Sulawesi previous year, triggering a tsunami, killed more than 4,000 people and devastated the city of Palu.

One of the strongest intensities of the quake was felt at 4 MMI (Modified Mercalli Intensity) in Luwuk district, the official said. Vale, with a nickel smelter, and Donggi-Senoro with an LNG plant, said operations were running as normal.

There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage.

"I ran straight outside after the quake - everything was swaying", 29-year-old Palu resident Mahfuzah told AFP.

The tremor off the eastern coast of Sulawesi is on the other side of the island from disaster-hit Palu, where residents still felt the quake despite being hundreds of kilometres away. However, the USGS has expressed the possibility of damage to poor construction or weak structures.

The sprawling archipelago is also lined with over 100 volcanoes.

The "ring" stretches along a 25,000-mile arc and is formed by tectonic plates - massive slabs of the Earth's crust.
