Thousands block London roads to demand action on climate change

Demonstrators during a Extinction Rebellion protest in Parliament Square in London

Last November, Extinction Rebellion forced Westminster, Lambeth, Waterloo, Blackfriars and Southwark Bridges in London to close, issuing a statement that read, "Extinction Rebellion demands that the United Kingdom government immediately tells the truth and declares a climate and ecological emergency, that it reverses inconsistent policies and reduces to net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2025, and creates a citizen's assembly to oversee these changes".

Protesters also gathered at Marble Arch, situated at the end of Oxford Street, at Piccadilly Circus, and Parliament Square.

The campaign group said that "over 100 fearless rebels" had been arrested, some willingly.

"In Europe, out of Europe, it makes no difference if we have no liveable habitat", he said.

"They can change a few of the laws along with the Paris agreement so that we can really work towards achieving a practical target".

"This will be a full-scale festival of creative resistance, with people's assemblies, art actions, stage performances, talks, workshops, food and family spaces", the group says on its website.

Williams, who took part in Monday's protest, said at a meditation the night before that humans had declared war on nature.

He said: "We are here tonight to declare that we do not wish to be at war". They plan to engage in acts of non-violent civil disobedience against governments in capital cities around the world.

While organisers encouraged people to set up camp in Hyde Park overnight into today, they were warned they could be breaking the law by doing so under Royal Parks legislation.

The protests were organized by the organization Extinction Rebellion; other protests were scheduled globally in roughly 80 cites in 33 countries, according to CNN.

Scotland Yard said they have "appropriate policing plans" in place for the demonstrations and that officers will be used from across the force "to support the public order operation during the coming weeks".

Police have advised Londoners to leave extra time for their journeys because of possible delays caused by the protest.
