Trump tells immigrants seeking asylum: 'Our country is full'

Trump says he'll slap tariffs on Mexico if it doesn't stop flow of drugs and migrants

Trump had threatened for almost two weeks to close the border, arguing Mexico was not doing enough to stop illegal immigrants and illicit drugs from entering the U.S. The president backed off those threats after advisors and some Republican senators urged him to do so, warning the effects could be economically devastating.

Meanwhile on Thursday, Trump backed away from his repeated threat to immediately close the southern USA border with Mexico, but raise a new specter of eventually slapping tariffs on vehicle imports from Mexico unless it does to stop immigrants.

Pelosi says Trump's emergency declaration was a "sham". "Can't take you anymore". Our country is full, our area's full, the sector is full. "Mexico understands that we're going to close the border, or I'm going to tariff the cars", he said. "So turn around, that's the way it is".

But on Thursday he shifted his tone, and sought to highlight what he claims is major action being taken by Mexico to stop migrants entering through its own southern border. "This will supersede USMCA".

"So we will put tariffs if they don't apprehend (migrants) and ultimately - we're going to give a period of time, but if in a year from now, if drugs continue to pour in, we're going to put tariffs on them", he said. "I may shut it down at some point, but I'd rather do tariffs", Trump told reporters.

As Trump landed in California, the state's governor ripped the president's push for Congress to pass legislation that would tighten asylum rules to make it harder for people to qualify. Congress approved just under $1.4 billion for work on border barricades.

Trump has yet to complete any new mileage of fencing or other barriers anywhere on the border.

After inspecting the 30-foot "bollard wall" at the Calexico-Mexicali border, the president flew on to Los Angeles for a private fundraising event in Beverley Hills with a key GOP donor, reported to be healthcare executive Lee Samson.

It was not immediately clear if Trump's demand for Mexico to crack down on the flow of migrants also faces a one year deadline or has to be satisfied in the near future.

Across the entire U.S. -Mexico border, 82 miles of border barrier has been erected this year, and another 97 miles will be completed by the end of the year, Lt. Gen. Todd Semonite, the chief of engineers and commanding general of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers said. The White House says the barrier is marked with a plaque bearing Mr Trump's name and those of top homeland security officials.

Trump declared an emergency, claiming the power to spend money to build the barrier, after Congress failed to approve his full request for funds.

Trump also offered praise for Mexico which, under the presidency of Andres Manual Lopez Obrador (AMLO), has acted as an auxiliary agent of the US Border Patrol. According to the Washington Post, the president was on hand to visit a new two-mile section of border fencing.

Trump loves to dangle the threat of auto tariffs in worldwide negotiations, and suggested in February that he might impose duties on vehicles made inside the European Union.

Trump has been increasingly exasperated at his inability to halt the swelling number of migrants entering the United States, including thousands who have been released after arriving because border officials have no space for them. His words show a total disregard of the Constitution, our justice system, and what it means to be an American, ' said Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom.
