Alabama Senate approves country’s most restrictive abortion ban

Female film workers in Georgia urge Hollywood not to boycott over abortion ban

Alabama lawmakers voted Tuesday to ban virtually all abortions in the state - including for victims of rape and incest - sending the strictest law in the nation to the state's Republican governor, who is expected to sign it.

Alabama's state Senate passed a bill on Tuesday to outlaw almost all abortions, creating exceptions only to protect the mother's health, as part of a multistate effort to have the U.S. Supreme Court reconsider a woman's constitutional right to an abortion.

Emboldened by conservative justices who have joined the Supreme Court, abortion opponents in several states are seeking to spark a legal challenge they hope could cause the court to revisit Roe v. Wade, the 1973 decision that legalized abortion nationwide. A handful of smaller studios have since announced they're refusing to film in Georgia, and far-left actress Alyssa Milano is calling for women to take part in a "sex strike", because "until women have legal control over our own bodies we just can not risk pregnancy". Republican Senator Clyde Chambliss said as debate began on the proposed ban.

Actress and activist Alyssa Milano has called for a sex strike under the social media hashtag #SexStrike in response to the campaigns against abortion rights, urging women to refuse sex with men "until we get bodily autonomy back".

"Our bill says that baby in the womb is a person", said Republican Rep. Terri Collins, the bill's sponsor.

"You don't have to raise that child".

Doctors in the state would face felony jail time up to 99 years if convicted. Lt. Gov. Will Ainsworth, who presides over the Senate, posted on Twitter that his position is simple - "Abortion is murder".

The Week: "Georgia's "heartbeat" abortion bill could imprison women for life". Republican Gov. Kay Ivey has not said whether she will sign it, and said she was waiting for a final version of the bill. "It stops safe and legal abortion".

The ACLU of Alabama is on record saying it will sue if the bill becomes law. Randall Marshall, executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Alabama, said a complaint is being drafted to challenge the ban if enacted.

"As this legislation is still making its way through the legislative process, the governor intends to withhold comment until it makes its way to her desk for signature", Ivey spokeswoman Lori Jhons said in a statement.
