Hopefully we're not going to have to plan for that. "And if we did that, we'd send a hell of a lot more troops than that", Trump told reporters.

In Tehran, Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei cautioned: "Neither we, nor them, is seeking war".

The main threat Hunt referred to was any confrontation between the U.S. and Iran.

Iran has repeatedly threatened to close the strait in case of a military confrontation with the United States.

The USS Abraham Lincoln is replacing another carrier rotated out of the Gulf last month.

Iran dismissed the allegation that it could be targeting maritime traffic as nonsense.

How is Iran signaling its intentions?

Speaking to the Iranian Students" News Agency he said: "An aircraft carrier that has at least 40 to 50 planes on it and 6,000 forces gathered within it was a serious threat for us in the past.

It came two days after four oil tankers, including two Saudi-owned ones, were damaged off the coast of the United Arab Emirates in what Emirati officials described as acts of sabotage.

Such drones remain hard to shoot down with either light or heavy weapons.

Washington has increased sanctions on Tehran, saying it wants to reduce Iranian oil exports to zero, after quitting the 2015 nuclear pact between Iran and global powers past year.

In addition to having allies Hezbollah in Lebanon and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad in the Gaza Strip, Iran also has a number of explosive missiles aimed at Israel making the country a risky threat.

A USA official familiar with American intelligence identified Iran as a prime suspect yesterday, although Washington has no conclusive proof.

The incident has increased tensions between Iran, which borders the nearby Strait of Hormuz, and the US. Iran may fire rockets at Israel'. In the meantime, we could see some price swings.

The attack is just one of many recent assaults on oil industry in the region, coming not long after four oil tankers were sabotaged while anchored in the Mideast.

The Pentagon justified the naval deployment by citing "intelligence" of a possible looming Iranian attack on USA interests in the region.

"It should be noted that Iran operated in the 1980s against the Marines in Beirut - through Hezbollah - and claimed the lives of hundreds".

The Strait of Hormuz, a major energy waterway in the world, has witnessed a war of statements between Tehran, Washington, and Gulf states. An estimated one-third of the the world's oil exports pass through this narrow sea channel, which makes it strategically significant in a world economy that is heavily dependent on oil.

A US official in Washington, without offering any evidence, told the AP that an American military team's initial assessment indicated Iran or Iranian allies used explosives to blow holes in the ships.

But even as all the hardware and people line up across the region, there are indicators that neither side wants this to get out of hand.

Iran has rejected the allegation and Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said on Tuesday that "extremist individuals" in the USA government were pursuing risky policies, amid a war of words with Washington over sanctions.

"We are very anxious about the risk of a conflict happening by accident with an escalation that is unintended on either side but ends with some kind of conflict", he said as he arrived for a meeting of European Union foreign ministers in Brussels.

Iranian foreign ministry spokesman Abbas Mousavi called the incidents "alarming and regrettable".

"The only card that the Iranian regime still has is its militias and terrorist attacks against oil facilities".
