Blue Origin’s Moon Mission and Lunar Lander

Founder Chairman CEO and President of Amazon Jeff Bezos unveils his space company Blue Origin's space exploration lunar lander rocket called Blue Moon during an unveiling event in Washington

Billionaire entrepreneur Jeff Bezos, founder of rocket company Blue Origin, unveiled on Thursday a mockup of a lunar lander spacecraft and discussed missions to the moon in a strategy tailored to the US government's renewed push to establish a lunar outpost in just five years.

Bezos, the world's richest man and also chief executive and founder of Amazon.com, is scheduled to host a rare media event at 4PM EDT (2000 GMT) in Washington to provide "an update on our progress and share our vision of going to space to benefit Earth", Blue Origin said in an advisory. A large tank of liquefied nitrogen fuel occupies its center.

In March, the Trump administration announced that it meant to return United States astronauts to the Moon by the end of 2024.

"It's an incredible vehicle, and it will go to the Moon", he declared.

A couple of years ago, when Bezos first teased the project, he said it would start by sending a couple of tons of cargo to the moon to build a lunar base - it sounds like that's still what the company intends to do. Bezos said at the end of the short presentation, "If that doesn't inspire you, you are at the wrong event". After it lands, Blue Moon will deploy a small rover.

The Blue Moon lander that Bezos revealed today is created to carry infrastructure payloads to the moon, not people. This configuration could be used to send NASA astronauts to the surface of the Moon by 2024. Water can be exploited to produce hydrogen, which in turn could fuel future exploration of the solar system.

Other companies will be competing to build pieces of Gateway, an outpost that NASA plans to put into orbit around the moon as a way station for astronauts headed to the moon's surface.

At an invite-only press event in Washington, D.C., Bezos announced a massive vision for the future in which "Earth is zoned residential and light industry", with heavy industry and mining moving to space. The news comes just a day after Congress grilled NASA officials over how it failed to come up with plans to get to the Moon by 2024.

Mr. Bezos, who also owns The Washington Post, walked off the stage without providing details, including launch dates, customers and the plan for humans on his rockets.

Speaking about "O'Neill colonies", an idea proposed by American Physicist Gerard O'Neil in a book published in 1976, Bezos described how humans should be living in space full time, but right now the cost is too high due to a lack of infrastructure.

Bezos confirmed his commitment to fly the first people in New Shepard this year, and New Glenn in 2021. "We're going to leave it, and it's going to make this planet better", Mr Bezos told GeekWire.

The New Shepard rocket first reached space past year, achieving a height of 66 miles (106 kilometers) in April 2018.
