Brexit Party leader Nigel Farage visits Wakefield city centre

Far-right activist Tommy Robinson's Facebook page has been taken down

Pro-Brexit British politician Nigel Farage has been hit with a milkshake while campaigning in the European Parliament election.

Nigel Farage has been hit by a milkshake after being attacked by a Remainer in the centre of Newcastle. Crowther, a man from Throckley, Newcastle, told BBC it was his milkshake. "I didn't know he was in town".

He explained: "It's a right of protest against people like him".

Sky News picked up on how Crowther has stood by his actions after being charged with common assault, saying "the bile and the racism he spouts out in this country is far more damaging than a bit of milkshake to his front".

He said he had been looking forward to the milkshake, "but I think it went on a better goal".

Soon after the attack, a visibly shaken Farage can be heard reprimanding his security team for their inability to protect him successfully.

Farage blamed the incident on European Union supporters who "have become radicalised, to the extent that normal campaigning is becoming impossible".

He added: "For a civilised democracy to work you need the losers consent, politicians not accepting the referendum result have led us to this".

Northumbria Police confirmed Paul Crowther had been charged after the incident involving the Brexit Party leader while he was on a walkabout in the north east yesterday. He had not planned the protest, but after buying the milkshake and seeing Farage nearby on an unannounced campaign visit, he saw the occasion his "only chance [to] protest".

At the same time, Burger King tweeted to remind their Scottish customers that they will continue to sell the dairy beverages, drawing criticism from some people.

This was in direct response to other members of the U.K.'s political right being pelted with milkshakes by protesters. Burger King later sent a follow-up tweet, staying: "We'd never endorse violence - or wasting our delicious milkshakes!"
