Desperate Housewives star Felicity Huffman pleads guilty in college admissions scandal

Felicity Huffman

Felicity Huffman teared up while pleading guilty to mail fraud in a federal court on May 13, learning that she could face significant jail time for the alleged crimes.

Huffman paid admissions consultant William "Rick" Singer in order to have her daughter take the exam at the West Hollywood Test Center, which Singer controlled. Under these conditions, Huffman's daughter scored 1420 of her SATs, approximately 400 points higher than she scored a year earlier on her PSATs. Federal prosecutors are aiming for a sentence between four and ten months in federal prison on the guilty plea.

She is among 14 prominent parents who have agreed to plead guilty since dozens of people were arrested in March in the case named "Operation Varsity Blues". Because Huffman agreed to plead guilty, prosecutors have promised to recommend a sentence at the low end of that range, but the judge could also choose not to send her to prison.

Prosecutors are recommending four-months of prison time for the actress, a fine of $20,000, and twelve-months of supervised release.

"I am ashamed of the pain I have caused my daughter, my family, my friends, my colleagues and the educational community", Huffman previously said in her statement.

"I had no knowledge of Mr. Singer paying (others)", Huffman said Monday before crying.

She was secretly recorded discussing the scheme as she made plans to falsify a college entrance exam score for her oldest daughter, Sophia Macy. She said yes, and also said she had "requested, for legitimate medical reasons", that Sofia, who sees a neuropsychologist, receive extra time on the test, according to NBC News.

Prosecutors have charged 33 parents with participating in the scheme with Mr. Singer, including Ms. Huffman, who was nominated for an Oscar for best actress for her role in 2005's Transamerica, and Lori Loughlin, who starred in the TV series Full House. The couple also considered using Singer's services for their younger daughter, but ultimately opted not to, according to a criminal complaint.

Huffman issued a statement last month saying she is "in full acceptance of my guilt, and with deep regret and shame over what I have done, accept full responsibility for my actions and I will accept the consequences that stem from those actions". Authorities say Sloane paid $250,000 to get his son admitted to USC as a fake water polo recruit by purchasing the requisite equipment online and hiring a graphic designer to falsify photos of his son playing the sport for his USC application.
