A helicopter crashed into the Hudson River in New York City on Wednesday shortly after taking off from Manhattan, causing minor injuries to the pilot and a dockworker, police and fire officials said.

A mobile phone video of the helicopter going down, taken by a WCBS TV editor, showed it descending into the river just feet from the helipad.

The helicopter spins about 180 degrees as it quickly loses altitude - eventually crashing into the water below with a massive splash that appears to send debris flying into the air.

Five people died when a sightseeing helicopter crashed into the East River previous year.

'Earlier today, a helicopter made a safe emergency landing on floats in the Hudson River near the heliport.

The helicopter is operated by Blade chopper service, which operates a shuttle service between Manhattan and local airports.

Emergency crews rushed to the scene near 12th Avenue and West 34th Street by land and by water to help recover the helicopter.

The helicopter fell short of the landing pad on West 30th Street.

The helicopter drops down into the Hudson River.

"It was just instinct", Sciaino said. The pilot's injuries are also not considered life-threatening.

When the FDNY descended on the scene, "the pilot was exiting the helicopter and getting onto a civilian boat", FDNY Firefighter Tim O'Neill told Fox News.

"We train for this - we are set up for scuba diving, and were prepared for a surface rescue or a dive into a submerged helicopter", O'Neill added.

Adam Sciaino, the NY Waterway captain of the Gov. Thomas Kean ferry, and deckhand Edwin Montoya rescued the pilot from the water, according to the ferry company.
