Having signed a five-year contract extension only last summer, the French forward made the shock statement on Tuesday evening via Atlético's official social media channels after meeting with Diego Simeone - the team's manager - and the chief executive, Miguel Ángel.

Antoine Griezmann has told Atletico Madrid he will not return to the club next season.

ESPN's Moises Llorens reported in March that the 28-year-old turned down the chance to join Barcelona last summer but had grown increasingly frustrated at Atletico this season.

Atletico confirmed on Tuesday that Griezmann will leave at the end of the season and the France worldwide posted a video shortly after.

The France worldwide forward has announced that he will be leaving the club, with multiple reports suggesting a move to Spanish rival Barcelona is in the offing.

He said: "Barcelona are now ready to pay €125M release clause for Antoine Griezmann".

"Talks ongoing with the player about the contract to finalise the deal (5 years)".

He said: "It has been five incredible years, thank you very much for everything, I carry you in my heart".

Griezmann thank the Atletico's supporters, saying that: "I have taken the decision to leave, to see other things, to have other challenges".

The announcement of Griezmann's Atletico departure comes a little over two months after his fellow countryman and Barcelona defender Samuel Umtiti claimed he regretted not joining the Spanish champions.
