Hamilton claims Spanish Grand Prix to go top

Hamilton dedicates Spanish win to fan with cancer

Ladies and gentlemen, meet Lewis Hamilton's biggest fan Harry Shaw, the inspirational five-year old who has been sent a Formula One auto after he "inspired" his idol.

After Mercedes' record-breaking five consecutive 1-2 finishes in 2019, many are wondering if the team can complete an unprecedented clean sweep this year. Bottas surged past Hamilton from the line en route to winning in the season-opening Australia GP.

"It's incredible what we're achieving and what we have achieved in these six and a half years". Team boss Christian Horner described Verstappen's Spanish performance as "phenomenal" and you'd be hard pressed finding anyone who disagreed with that assessment. "That is my sole goal and my sole objective".

When the race was restarted, Hamilton and Bottas were able to move off into the distance quickly, leaving Verstappen to battle it out with the Ferraris for third.

Bottas, to his credit, did his level best to avoid a collision and fend off the surprise attack. Third place on the rostrum went to Red Bull Racing's Max Verstappen.

Vettel was the other driver to separate the McLarens, with Sergio Perez - also carrying out Pirelli testing in a second Racing Point - finishing 11th behind Norris. Hamilton also recorded a video message of support for him to watch.

"It was pretty tight (at the first curve), but I lost it at the start", Bottas said. "I feft some odd behavior with the clutch".

"It is really annoying".

He doesn't like being beaten by his team-mate (whoever it might be), and Hamilton couldn't hide his annoyance at Valtteri Bottas's pole position on Saturday.

"It wasn't a replay of Baku at least", Hamilton said stepping onto the winner's podium.

The two Mercedes drivers are competing against each other. and it's not much fun for outsiders, admits Hamilton, especially for spectators.

"It was respectful and balanced, as they always are", Hamilton said.

"In the end, obviously I did Lewis a favour because I distracted Valtteri".

Frenchman Pierre Gasly was sixth for Red Bull, with both the Haas cars finishing in the points - Kevin Magnussen in seventh and Romain Grosjean 10th and scoring for the first time this season.

The safety auto was deployed after McLaren's Lando Norris and Racing Point's Lance Stroll tangled at the first corner and ended up stranded in the gravel.

The second Toro Rosso driver Alexander Albon finished eleventh, while Daniel Ricciardo and Nico Hulkenberg ended a lacklustre weekend for Renault in 12th and 13th.

The Williams drivers locked out the back row of the grid, with George Russell blitzing Robert Kubica by 1.2 seconds, though the Englishman will start last when he serves a grid penalty for changing his gearbox before qualifying after a crash in Saturday morning practice.
