Huawei chairman agrees to sign 'no-spy' deal

Huawei says willing to sign 'no-spy' agreements

The U.S. has been trying without success to persuade other governments to exclude to exclude equipment made by Huawei from super-fast 5G mobile networks that will connect billions of devices.

No US government agency can use Huawei's products.

Chinese telecom giant Huawei is willing to sign a "no-spy" agreement with countries including Britain, the firm's chairman said on Tuesday, as the head of North Atlantic Treaty Organisation said Britain must preserve secure mobile networks.

Washington believes equipment made by Huawei Technologies Co Ltd, the world's third largest smartphone maker, could be used by the Chinese state to spy.

Liang wants to ensure everyone that Huawei does not act on behalf of the Chinese government, and respects the local laws and regulations of each country.

"Huawei and 5G network is extremely important", Mr Stoltenberg told a London business conference.

Liang, speaking on the sidelines of a meeting with Huawei's British technology partners, said the company never meant to be in the eye of a political storm.

The official, who was granted anonymity to discuss a sensitive issue, said on Tuesday night that the order was not meant to single out any country or company.

And while the order reportedly won't name any specific countries and companies, it's tailored towards Huawei, which the US government deems to be a spy threat (and which Huawei has vehemently denied). "No spying, no back doors", and also explained that our understanding of the ways the Chinese government is alleged to wield influence over its businesses are incorrect, with Liang saying there's no local law that forces businesses to allow access to the government if requested.

However, the German government says it has not now received any offers for a no-spy contract to help win a bid there to build its 5G network.

The British government is in the middle of a furious debate over whether to let Huawei roll out its next-generation mobile service.
