'Imperative' UK government strikes new EU Brexit deal by June

Jeremy Corbyn

Peter Bone has said it is "absurd" for the Prime Minister to bring her Withdrawal Agreement Bill back to the Commons for a fourth time.

"However, it was agreed that it was imperative to bring forward the Withdrawal Agreement Bill in time for it to receive royal assent by the summer parliamentary recess".

A spokesman said Theresa May had made clear the government's "determination to bring the talks to a conclusion and deliver on the referendum result to leave the EU".

A government spokesperson said May will put forward a Withdrawal Agreement Bill, making Brexit law in the United Kingdom, in the week of June 3, before the summer parliamentary recess in July.

"Tomorrow talks will continue at an official level as we seek the stable majority in Parliament that will ensure the safe passage of the Withdrawal Agreement Bill and the UK's swift exit from the European Union".

There remains little hope of a deal, with senior Labour figures saying the party will not sign an agreement that the next Conservative leader could tear up.

She indicated earlier this year that she would resign once her Brexit deal with Brussels has been passed by MPs - a promise that seemed to persuade a number of pro-Brexit Tories to back the deal, among them Boris Johnson and Jacob Rees-Mogg.

A bill implementing the Brexit deal will be introduced in the first week of June, the government has confirmed.

Ministers and the Labour frontbench are in their seventh week of talks in an attempt to reach consensus.

Asked if getting the deal through would also make that Mrs May's exit date, the spokesman said: "What she wants to do is get a deal through by the summer recess. It would destroy the Conservative Party".

"We haven't seen the significant shift yet that we require to be able to support a deal", Labour's second most powerful man, finance chief John McDonnell, said on Tuesday.

Thirteen former Cabinet ministers and Brady have written to May warning that "any customs union" with Labour would forfeit the "loyal middle of the Conservative party".

Talks on Tuesday evening between May and leader of the opposition Jeremy Corbyn "were both useful and constructive", he added.

"We believe that a customs union-based deal with Labour will very likely lose the support of Conservative MPs, like us, who backed the Withdrawal Agreement in March (in many cases very reluctantly), and you be unlikely to gain as many Labour MPs to compensate", they said.

The Withdrawal Agreement on the terms of the UK's exit, and a Political Declaration outlining a framework for future ties, had been negotiated by London and Brussels and approved by the 27 other European Union governments.

"I talked to colleagues and some who voted for it last time now think it's dead and will vote against it this time".

Defeat in the June vote would likely spell the end of her divorce deal and her premiership.
