Mariana Trench submarine dive finds manmade rubbish at sea's deepest point

On the deepest dive ever made by a human inside a submarine, a Texas investor found something he could have found in the gutter of almost any street in the world: rubbish.

The team claims to have discovered four new species of prawn-like crustaceans called amphipods, observed a creature called a spoon worm more than 22,000 feet down and a pink snailfish at more than 26,000 feet down, BBC reported.

In the next step, the team said its scientists were going to perform tests on the creatures found to in order to have a clear picture about the percentage of plastics found in them. The team also discovered brightly colored rocks on the sea floor, potentially formed by microbes, the BBC reports.

"We feel like we have just created, validated and opened a powerful door to discover and visit any place, any time, in the ocean - which is 90 percent unexplored", said Vescovo.

"It is very important to us that we show some initial scientific discoveries, just to give a small sample of what we could do if the sub was in the hands of a professional research organization", he says.

His latest dive went 16 metres lower than the previous deepest descent in the trench in 1960. Humanity's waste had reached the deepest parts of the sea floor.

The expedition team notes in the press release that the next stop on the Five Deeps Expedition is the Horizon Deep in the South Pacific Ocean. It's not the first time plastic has been found at the bottom of the sea, but it's a reminder of the scale of the problem.

The dive was the first for The Five Deeps Expedition, funded by Vescovo, and is being filmed for a Discovery Channel documentary.

According to CBS, the first deep dive into the Mariana Trench was in 1960, when US Navy Lieutenant Don Walsh and Swiss engineer Jacques Piccard ventured into the deep abyss of the Pacific Ocean.

What's more shocking in the report is the epidemic proportions of plastic in the world's oceans, with an estimated 100 million tonnes dumped there to date. Two of the dives, including the deepest one made on 28 April, were solo dives piloted by Vescovo.

The Molloy Deep has yet to be explored, and Vescovo's team will be there in August, according to CNN.

"It was very disappointing to see obvious human contamination of the deepest point in the ocean", Vescovo said in an interview.

Victor Vescovo, a private equity investor, climbed the highest peaks on the planet's seven continents before turning his attention to the ocean's extreme depths. The group is using a submersible called Limiting Factor to complete its challenge. "I'm hopeful that we'll be able to study the ocean before we destroy it".
