Mike Pompeo warns Russian Federation not to meddle in 2020 USA election

Federica Mogherini right chaired a meeting with German French and British foreign ministers in Brussels

Speaking at a press conference in the southern resort city of Sochi, Ushakov said Moscow is aware of usa attempts to persuade Turkey to suspend the deal.

"I conveyed that there are things that Russian Federation can do to demonstrate that these kinds of activities are a thing of the past".

"We are ready to do that if our USA colleagues are ready to reciprocate".

"If we didn't put in place assets to defend ourselves that would be negligent", Hook said.

Iran last week announced it was suspending some of its commitments under the agreement, a year after US President Donald Trump withdrew from the accord and imposed swingeing sanctions on the Islamic republic - putting the deal in peril. Instead, he said, Iran has "chosen the path of resistance", adding that US officials know it's not in their interest to engage in a hot military conflict.

Pompeo - who like most of the United States political class, with the major exception of President Donald Trump, has been outspoken in his criticism of Putin - said that the two countries found areas on which to cooperate, and voiced optimism in breaking a deadlock on Syria. And we hope that we can continue to move forward.

"We've said many times that we also want to fully restore our relations".

Pompeo met with Putin on Monday in Russia's resort of Sochi where he sought to alleviate some of the concerns about the spiraling tensions but made clear the US would respond to any attacks on American targets.

Putin hailed the two-year investigation by special counsel Robert Mueller that did not find collusion by the Trump campaign - but documented extensive meddling by Russian Federation, especially by manipulating social media.

They also discussed North Korea, which both want to see give up its nuclear weapons.

Lavrov defended Russia's position and said the threats Maduro's government is receiving from US administration officials coupled with Guaido's seeming support for a foreign military intervention, "bear no relation to democracy".

"The Trump Administration has been clear - we do not recognize Russia's attempted annexation of Crimea".

"It's clear that such insinuations are absolute fiction", he said after the talks with his USA counterpart.

Pompeo - who just three days earlier in a speech said that "the Putin regime slays dissidents in cold blood" - said he was not trying to reconcile but rather to find common interests.

Although Pompeo and Lavrov discussed a wide range of bilateral and global problems, including the situations in Iran, North Korea, Ukraine, Syria and Venezuela, there were no major breakthroughs on any of those issues.

The U.S. has been critical of Russian Federation for propping up Maduro's regime.

The talks also touched on arms control and the conflict in Syria, in which Russian Federation and the United States back opposing sides.

Russian Federation should now work with Ukraine's new president-elect to bring peace to eastern Ukraine, said Pompeo, adding that he wanted Moscow to free a group of captured Ukrainian sailors.
