More than 800 cases of measles in the US

839 cases of measles reported in 23 states; no confirmed cases in Alabama

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced Monday that 75 more measles cases were confirmed last week in 23 states, bringing the US total to 839 so far this year. The Centers for Disease Control and Protection reported 75 new cases Monday as a nationwide outbreak continues to grow. Brooklyn and Rockland, New York; Oakland, Michigan; and Clark County, Washington, located in southern part of the state, were among the hardest hit. The majority of the measles cases are in NY, but some are in Missouri.

Officials in New York City and Rockland County - where almost 700 people combined have contracted measles since late a year ago - have taken measures such as declaring emergencies over the issue and implementing bans on unvaccinated minors in certain schools or public places.

That's up from 764 cases reported last week, when officials said the outbreak had reached a level not seen in the U.S.in 25 years. Cases in those states occurred primarily among unvaccinated people in Orthodox Jewish communities.

Sarkar added: "We have long known that vaccine avoidance is a critical public health issue in the USA and Europe". That does not include the cases in New York City which totaled 466 as of Tuesday; 410 of those have been reported this year.

Also Monday, New York City closed a ninth school for violating an emergency health order.

This week a new awareness campaign is set to be released by the New York City health department with ads on bus shelters, in publications and elsewhere targeting the communities in English and Yiddish. NY became the first state to require a measles booster shot, which is now required across the country and is said by the CDC to increase the effectiveness of the vaccine from 93% to 97%. "That's been the history of measles since we developed the vaccine".

Babies who are traveling to or living in an area with an ongoing outbreak who have had a first dose at 12 months to 15 months do not need to wait until age 4 for that second dose; rather, they can and should get it anytime after 28 days from the first vaccination. Measles vaccination rates climbed above 90%, where they've remained.
