New 612bhp McLaren GT offers supreme comfort with blistering performance

McLaren GT

Despite a whole host of luxuries being loaded into the cabin, the GT can accelerate from zero to 60mph in 3.1 seconds, motor up to 124mph in nine and power on relentlessly to a top speed of 203mph - hardly what you'd call a relaxing pootle.

The carbon-fibre passenger cell has had a bespoke section fitted at the rear to incorporate a new luggage area that McLaren says can accommodate a bag of golf clubs or a pair of skis. The closest it has come is the still very much performance-based 570 GT, with a comfort-oriented McLaren still absent from the current range.

The GT's styling is an evolution of McLaren's latest design. Overall, body movement is tailored for occupant comfort and vertical load and contact patch variation are optimised to enhance grip levels, but each of the three active dynamics handling modes – Comfort, Sport and Track – has its own distinct set of parameters to reflect the selected preference, for example, a particularly compliant ride in Comfort mode.

That impression is a effect of the GT's greater length - based on the 720S, it's fully 153mm longer than the Sports Series model - alongside a new design that certainly accentuates it. It features industry-standard HERE navigation mapping and real-time traffic information.

To emphasize it as long journey auto, long and elegant exterior lines and muscular rear fenders are incorporated.

McLaren is trying to make a big breakthrough in the Grand Touring space with its brand new product, the GT, with a combination of a number of attributes. Inside, the GT gets streamlined, electrically adjusted and heated seats which are claimed to be optimised for long-distance comfort, with the ideal amount of padding and shoulder and back support in combination with superb lateral control. When combined with the front "frunk" - a boot where the engine would be in a traditional auto - the GT has an impressive 570 litres of luggage capacity.

"The new McLaren GT combines competition levels of performance with continent-crossing capability, wrapped in a lovely body and true to McLaren's ethos of designing superlight cars with a clear weight advantage over rivals", said CEO, Mike Flewitt. The 7-inch touch-screen infotainment system is "the company's most sophisticated to date", McLaren said.

It's the first McLaren road vehicle that puts comfort and practicality as main features. Suspension, steering and brakes are all bespoke and optimized to provide unforgettable driving experience of a Grand Tourer.

For now, though, it's all about this vehicle - one which, McLaren people tell us, will not come a moment too soon for its buyers. A 12-speaker Bowers&Wilkins premium audio system is available at an additional cost.

First deliveries are due to arrive later this year. The UK pricing has been announced at £163,000 (UK) which is approximately Rs 1.46 Crore, excluding import duty and taxes.
