President Trump gives Conrad Black a presidential pardon

Former media baron Conrad Black is shown at the University Club in Toronto on Tuesday

Donald Trump on Wednesday signed a full pardon for the former media mogul Conrad Black, who was convicted in 2007 of fraud and obstruction of justice and spent three and a half years in prison. Nolan has been a vocal advocate for criminal justice reform since he spent more than two years in federal prison during the 1990s.

Black, who was born Canadian - though he holds British citizenship and is a British peer - was deported to Canada after being released in 2012.

Black said in the article that he had not spoken to Trump since the President had taken office and that when his assistant put a call through from the White House, he first thought it was a prank.

The White House described Black, who past year published a glowing biography of Trump entitled "Donald J. Trump: A President Like No Other", as "entirely deserving" of the pardon.

An appeals court reversed two convictions, but left two others in place. Evidently after checking with White House counsel, Trump told Black that he was granting the pardon to reverse an injust verdict.

He wrote a column Thursday in Canada's National Post describing how Trump called him and revealed the pardon.

"My long ordeal with the US justice system was never anything but a confluence of unlucky events, the belligerence of several corporate governance charlatans, and grandstanding local and American judges, all fanned by an unusually frenzied global media showing exceptional interest in the case because I was a media owner", he wrote. During his 2007 trial, Trump had been expected to testify as a witness in Black's defense, before Black's lawyers made a decision to not have him testify.

It also cites several prominent individuals whom it says "have vigorously vouched for [Black's] exceptional character". But a conviction for felony fraud and obstruction of justice were upheld in 2010 and he was re-sentenced to 42 months in prison and fined $125,000. She notes that Black is the author of biographies on presidents Franklin Roosevelt and Richard Nixon, though she does not mention the Trump biography.

The pair has known each other for decades and Trump was once in business with Hollinger Inc.

The statement said those supporting Black's pardon include former U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, Sir Elton John, Rush Limbaugh and the late William F. Buckley, Jr., founder of the conservative magazine National Review.
