Sherpa, 49, scales Everest for record 23rd time

There are 378 climbers permitted to scale Everest this year alongside sherpas like Kami Rita

They also prepared facilities required for the mountain climbers who are expected to climb Mount Everest.

"This is a subject of Nation's Pride; 23 successful climb of Everest, is more than the normal imagination", said Tashi Lakpa Sherpa, MD at Seven Summit Treks.

Officials say Rita reached the summit with other climbers Wednesday morning and all of them were reported to be safe.

He made his first successful climb of Everest in 1994...

Kami Rita Sherpa, 48, a Nepali mountaineer waves towards the media personnel upon his arrival after climbing Mount Everest for a 22nd time, creating a new record for the most summits of the world's highest mountain, in Kathmandu, Nepal on May 20, 2018.

"I am still strong and want to climb Sagarmatha 25 times", Kami had told Reuters before leaving for the mountain in March referring to the Nepali name for Everest.

In addition to his almost two dozen summits of Everest, Rita has scaled several other peaks that are among the world's highest, including K-2, Cho-Oyu, Manaslu and Lhotse.

The Sherpas who serve as guides for the potential mountain climbers of Mount Everest first go up to the mountain themselves and prepare everything for the mountaineers who are expected to scale the mountain later.

Rita is working to make sure other Sherpa guides get the recognition they are due. "I did not even know you could set records earlier", Sherpa said, last month before setting off for Everest base camp.

Sherpa, 49, reached the summit Wednesday morning, breaking his own record that he set a year ago, his expedition company confirmed.

The route taken by him was pioneered by New Zealand's Sir Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay when they became the first climbers to reach the summit in 1953.

Each May, there are usually only a few windows of good weather near the summit during which climbers can attempt to scale the peak.

During this time, climbers gradually do longer and longer climbs from base camp, before going for the summit.

This season, almost 1,000 people, including 378 paying climbers, will attempt to scale the summit. Since then, he has climbed the mountain nearly every year.
