SpaceX to Launch 1st Batch of Satellites for Worldwide Internet Array

Elon Musk Shows Off 60 Starlink Satellites Stacked Inside A Falcon Rocket

In a phone call with journalists, Musk sounded cautious but excited. "There's a small possibility that all of these satellites will not work", the SpaceX founder said, according to Ars Technica.

"I do believe we will be successful, but it is far from a sure thing".

Elon Musk's space company, SpaceX, is planning to launch a set of 60 satellites in a single launch this week for the company's Starlink broadband network. The 60 internet satellites will be the first batch of spacecraft part of SpaceX's "Starlink" megaconstellation, which is expected to grow over the next few years. SpaceX boss Elon Musk tweeted it would take six more launches - 360 more satellites - for "minor coverage", and a dozen more launches - 720 satellites - for "moderate coverage". Noting it is a "multi-billion dollar endeavor", he said that SpaceX has enough capital for the time being. He added that SpaceX's latest funding round attracted "more interest than we were seeking". Starlink bases on utilizing low earth orbit (LEO) satellites.

All up, SpaceX plans to launch 4,000 satellites into its orbiting "mega-constellation".

SpaceX has competition from other heavily funded companies. That, in turn, would help the compete fund its next generation rocket, known as Starship, the company hopes to use to fly to the moon and eventually to Mars, he said.

Not only does it pose a threat to space travel, but technologies such as mobile phones, television, Global Positioning System and weather related services also rely on satellites, so a cataclysmic series of crashes could pose a threat to our already over-reliance for satellites. But when the likes of Amazon, OneWeb, Telesat, LeoSat and others intending placing - between them - thousands of satellites into orbit then the risks become greater. Frustrated with the pace at which Starlink satellites were being developed, he fired at least seven members of the program's senior management team at a campus in Redmond, Washington, outside Seattle, Reuters reported.

One of those ousted was Rajeev Badyal, who had joined SpaceX from Microsoft Corp.in 2014 and was vice president of satellites. Effectively a testbed for SpaceX to gain experience building an operating rockets made out of steel, Starhopper is unlikely to ever move beyond low-speed, low-altitude hover tests. He noted there are already companies, including Iridium Communications Inc., SES SA, Viasat Inc., Inmarsat Plc and Hughes Network Systems LLC that are now providing global broadband services from space.
