The "One Ring" robocalling scheme wants victims to call back

FCC warns about calls from West African ’222′ country code

The Federal Communications Commission warned consumers about this "one ring" scheme in an alert last week.

The Federal Communications Commission has confirmed reports of widespread calls in NY and Arizona connected to the scam, with a lot of them happening overnight. Thinking you missed a call, you call the number back.

Residents in NY and Arizona have been targeted of late, the FCC said, with the latest fake calls using the 222 area code for West African nation Mauritania.

The scam works like this: A scammer places a robocall to a number and hangs up after one or two rings.

The FCC is urging consumers not to call back any numbers they don't recognize, especially ones like these that appear to come from overseas.

"These calls are likely trying to prompt consumers to call the number back, often resulting in per minute toll charges similar to a 900 number", the agency said in a news release on Friday.

Consumers shouldn't return calls they don't recognize, according to the FCC. People should also monitor their phone bill for unusual charges. The idea is to get the caller to call the number back.

One-ring calls may appear to be from phone numbers somewhere in the United States, including three initial digits that resemble US area codes.

According to the FCC, advances in technology have allowed massive amounts of calls to be made cheaply and easily - giving scammers more opportunities to mask their identity.

Similarly, the Lafourche (Louisiana) Parish Sheriff's Office tweeted Friday, "Many people in our area received global calls last night".

If you never make global calls, consider talking to your phone company about blocking outbound worldwide calls to prevent accidental toll calls. If that fails, file a complaint with the FCC.
