Third of Northern Ireland adults in despair over body image

A report found social media can have an impact on mental wellbeing

New research from the 'Where's Your Head At?' campaign at Bauer Media has found that employees are three times more likely to discuss physical ailments over mental health issues at work.

'Whilst many employers are claiming to take mental health more seriously, the feedback I'm getting on my travels around the United Kingdom is that many of them are paying it lip service, ' said Natasha Devon MBE, WHYA campaigner and author, 'Our research shows that people still feel the stigma of discussing mental health in the workplace, fearing they will be seen as "unprofessional" if they do disclose a mental health issue.

"New codes of practice should include an expectation that social media companies must take practical steps to ensure that the content they promote does not exacerbate body image concerns", Ms Cameron said.

William called on the nation to really stop and listen to a person in need, in the minute-long message broadcast at 10.59am across hundreds of United Kingdom radio stations to mark the start of mental health awareness week.

"For some this is potentially very severe, with people saying they have self-harmed or had suicidal thoughts and feelings".

The charity is calling on the UK Government and industries to take action including regulating social media and giving more powers to the Advertising Standards Authority.

A third of adults have felt anxious over their body image, researchers say. The YMCA spoke to more than 2,000 young people aged 11 to 24 years old as part of its new report, which is part of the charity's Be Real Campaign.

When it comes to managers, Mind's research found that many feel they could do with more support. Two in five (40%) said images on social media have caused them to worry about their body image, with 40% expressing that their friends have said something to cause them to worry about their body image.
