Comedian and actor Tim Conway, best known for his role in TV's McHale's Navy and for making his co-stars on The Carol Burnett Show laugh, has died at 85.

The Hollywood Reporter reported Tuesday that Conway died this morning in Los Angeles.

He had been battling a longtime illness prior to his death, called Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus, said Howard Bragman, Conway's representative. The show aired on CBS from 1967 to 1978 and had a short summer stint on ABC in 1979. He won two more Emmys for guest appearances on Coach and 30 Rock.

His movie work included "The World's Greatest Athlete" in 1973, "The Apple Dumpling Gang" in 1975, "The Shaggy D.A." in 1976, "The Prize Fighter" in 1979 and "Private Eyes" in 1980.

Of his long-lived career in showbusiness, Conway once said, "I don't feature myself as being the head man". I cherish the times we had together both on the screen and off.

Conway, who was born on December 15, 1933, grew up near Cleveland and after serving in the Army worked in Cleveland radio and developed comedy routines. In one such incident, Conway was fond of recalling, he caused castmate Harvey Korman to wet his trousers from laughter. He later gained fame with a new generation as the voice of Barnacle Boy on "SpongeBob SquarePants". He attended Bowling Green State University and served in the U.S. Army. Actress Rose Marie, a co-star on "The Dick Van Dyke Show", liked his work and helped him get a regular spot on "The Steve Allen Show" in the early 1960s.

Conway is survived by his wife, Charlene, his stepdaughter, as well as six children he shared with his first wife, Mary Anne Dalton.
