Transgender Texas woman seen in videotaped attack found dead

Transgender woman who was attacked on video found fatally shot in Far East Dallas

A 23-year-old transgender woman seen on a widely circulated video being beaten in front of a crowd of people has been found dead in a Dallas shooting. She was pronounced dead at the scene, the victim of "homicidal violence", police said.

Weddington said Sunday that the investigation into the April attack continues. The attack was flagged as a hate crime given that transphobic epithets were screamed at her during the beating.

Muhlaysia Booker was found face-down in a street early Saturday, and no suspect has been identified, police Maj. Authorities have yet to make any arrests in her murder and are unsure there is a connection between her death and the assault she endured last month. The victim stated that the suspects used homophobic slurs during the assault.

CBS reported that Edward Thomas was arrested for the assault and was paid $200 to beat up Booker.

The incident began when Booker accidentally backed into a vehicle belonging to one of the men. Video of the attack was shared on social media. Police are unaware of Thomas' current whereabouts. "I call on anyone with information on this homicide to please contact the Dallas Police Department".

Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings tweeted about the latest shooting, saying he is "deeply saddened" by news of Booker's death.

Booker spoke out in the days after the attack to thank the community for supporting her.

At least three other black transgender women had been killed this year in the United States, according to Human Rights Campaign.

"This time, I can stand before you ... whereas in other scenarios, we are at a memorial".

It is clear that fatal violence disproportionately affects transgender women of color, and that the intersections of racism, sexism, homophobia, biphobia and transphobia conspire to deprive them of necessities to live and thrive.

HRC adds that institutional transphobia, combined with racism, makes it more likely for trans women of colour to not have housing, healthcare or work, leaving them more vulnerable as a result.
