Trash found littering Mariana Trench floor in deepest-ever sub dive

Explorer reaches deepest spot on Earth in historic dive

However, he also made an unsettling discovery as he descended almost 6.8 miles to a point in the Pacific Ocean's Mariana Trench that is the deepest place on Earth, seeing something he was not expecting to come across so deep beneath the surface - trash. During the deepest dive on April 28, which he undertook alone, Vescovo spent a total of four hours exploring the basin.

The dive was later verified to be 10,972m and Victor became the first person to reach the deepest part of the Pacific Ocean. They reportedly discovered human-made objects on the ocean's floor, like plastic objects and angular metals, and undiscovered marine species. He descended an impressive 35,853 feet (10,927 meters) into the Pacific Ocean, 52 feet (16 meters) deeper than any previous crewed dive.

"There were some small, translucent animals", Vescovo said. The deepest deep-sea dive ever may have just found them, the BBC reports.

His voyage took place in a submarine called The Limiting Factor, which is how Mr Vescovo is able to explore some of the most remote places on the planet. The mission is to create sonar mapping at the Earth's deepest points, including Atlantic Ocean's Puerto Rico Trench, the South Atlantic's South Sandwich Trench, the Java Trench in the Indian Ocean and the Molloy Deep in the Arctic Ocean.

"It is nearly indescribable how excited all of us are about achieving what we just did", said Vescovo after arriving in Guam after the completion of the dives.

He and his team are working to confirm that it was indeed a plastic bag, but the diver unequivocally believed what he saw was man-made.

Titanic director James Cameron repeated the feat in 2012.

Vescovo is the creator of the Five Deeps Expedition, the world's first manned journey to the deepest point in each of the five oceans. According to The Guardian, Stephanie Fitzherbert, a spokeswoman for Victor's Five Deeps Expedition said that Victor, the Dallas-based co-founder of Insight Equity Holdings, is trying to verify if manmade material is plastic or not. According to the CNN, the expedition team stated that they plan to test these samples to check how much plastic gets ingested.

Technology has changed quite a bit since the Challenger Deep was first explored in 1960 by oceanographers Don Walsh and Jacques Piccard in the submersible Triest. "And now in 2019, the Five Deeps Expedition's submersible Limiting Factor was the third", Walsh said, adding, "And I was there to see it".
