Trump Wants an Extra $1.6 Billion for NASA’s Mission to the Moon

The moon is shrinking like a grape — and that may be causing ‘moonquakes,’ NASA says | The Kansas City Star

They developed an algorithm that meant they could get a more accurate location for the epicenters of each quake as an award winning weekly American magazine published.

It is measured on a machine called a seismograph.

A new paper in Nature Geoscience discusses these findings, which could collectively demonstrate that the Moon is not, in fact, a geologically dead world.

Astronauts placed five seismometers on the Moon's surface during the Apollo 11, 12, 14, 15 and 16 missions.

Also on Monday, the president proposed that his administration would meet this requirement-in addition to the space agency's $21.5 billion annual funding allocation-with a new budget amendment, although this is not guaranteed as Congress still has to sign the money off.

What's more, most of the Moonquakes occurred during times of the month when the tidal stresses between the Moon and Earth were at their greatest, which would make those faults more likely to slip and thus cause a quake.

During the study, researchers analyzed 28 moonquakes from 1969 to 1977 and found that eight of these quakes were the result of pure tectonic activities.

Of those quakes, eight were picked up near to the faults that could be seen in images of the Moon's surface. They found it is less than 4 percent. Other events such as meteorite impacts can produce quakes, but those would produce different seismic signatures.

In 2010, Watters spearheaded a team that scrutinized images from Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter instigated in 2009 and discerned innumerable serpentine cliffs administered broadly over the surface. The bright patches have been exposed to this radiation only recently hence the existence of boulders and landslides is evidence of recent moonquakes. For example, bright patches of ground have been observed near faults, which appear to be patches of lunar regolith that have yet to be darkened by weathering and radiation. The fault scarps themselves are also a clue. NASA already had plans to return to the moon by 2028, however, in March this year, Vice-president Mike Pence announced the Trump administration wanted to push those plans to 2024.

The moon is ever so slowly shrinking over time, which is creating wrinkles in the crust that may be triggering moonquakes, a new study says. The crust of the moon is brittle, thus the surface of the moon breaks down as the interior shrinks.

One of the big hurdles is determining exactly what system will be used to get to the moon. The relatively small size of the Moon's fault scarps is in line with the more subtle contraction expected from a partially molten scenario.

A national expert familiar with NASA's long history of budget battles agreed that $1.6 billion is enough to move toward a 2024 launch, but in 2019 dollars is a far cry from NASA funding for the first manned moon missions half a century ago.

The goal is to have a fleet of commercial space vehicles making service missions between Earth and the moon, with stopovers at a space Gateway in lunar orbit. "We learned a lot from the Apollo missions, but they really only scratched the surface".

This research was funded by NASA's LRO project, with additional support from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada.
