What helps prevent dementia? Try exercise, not vitamin pills

To reduce dementia risk eating well and exercising do more than puzzles and pills

Every year, 10 million new dementia cases are reported, said a spokesperson for the agency.

The WHO explained dementia is an illness that affects memory, thinking, learning, and judgment.

The disease inflicts a heavy economic burden on societies as a whole, with the cost of caring for people with dementia expected to rise from an estimated $818 billion in 2015 to $2 trillion by 2030, World Health Organization said.

"We need to do everything we can to reduce our risk of dementia", the statement quoted the WHO Director-General, Tedros Ghebreyesus, as saying.

Maria C. Carrillo, chief science officer of the Alzheimer's Association in the United States, said there was substantial evidence that there were things people could do to reduce the risks.

The 12 lifestyle choices and conditions which fuel dementia have been identified by the World Health Organisation (WHO) in the most definitive list ever of how to avoid mental decline in later life. The good news is there are ways to reduce the risk of dementia and it starts with diet and exercise. These includes regular exercise, not drinking and smoking and adopting a healthy "Mediterranean-like" diet.

"Crucially, while age is the strongest known risk factor for cognitive decline, dementia is not a natural or inevitable outcome of aging", the organization explains.

Dementia represents a huge economic burden on society; the cost associated with providing dementia patients with the care and support they need is expected to reach US$2 trillion per year by 2030. However, there was not always strong evidence that dementia risk would be reduced with these steps. Studies have shown a relationship between the development of dementia with lifestyle related risk factors, certain medical conditions, and other risk factors such as social isolation and cognitive inactivity.

The guidelines are designed for use by healthcare providers and also for governments, policy-makers and planning authorities.

The WHO has set up an online training program for carers with advice on care management and dealing with behavioral changes, as well as looking after their own health.

Currently, iSupport is available for use in eight countries, with more expected to follow in the future.

The guidelines also do not endorse engaging in activities aimed at boosting cognition such as puzzles and games, saying that whilst these could be good for people with normal cognition or only mild impairment, there is little research showing that they are actually beneficial in terms of preventing dementia.

Key lifestyle choices such as getting regular exercise, not smoking or drinking too much, can reduce the risk of dementia and cognitive decline, the United Nations health agency said on Tuesday.
