Woman shot dead by United States police, seconds after yelling 'I'm pregnant'

Baytown police shoot pregnant woman

A Texas woman who screamed "I'm pregnant" before she was fatally shot by an officer Monday night - amid a struggle over his stun gun - was not actually pregnant, the Baytown Police Department said Tuesday. However, police say as the officer tased the woman, she then gained control of his taser and tried to fire it at the officer. He apparently recognized her from previous encounters and knew she had "outstanding warrants", according to a statement from Lt. Steve Dorris of the Baytown Police Department.

In the video, the woman is heard saying: "You're actually harassing me" and "I'm actually walking to my house". A struggle ensued and the officer used his Taser on her, but she allegedly grabbed it from him and used it on him as he was trying to handcuff her.

Video of the fatal encounter was posted to social media and raised questions as to what caused the officer to shoot and kill the woman. As she is sitting on the pavement, with a lit object in her hand, five shots ring out and she slumps over.

"It's just sad - very sad - when you see somebody for the past six months walking around", Jennifer Sims said. The officer, identified as an 11-year police veteran, had been patrolling an apartment complex in Baytown and spotted Brown.

The shaky footage catches the cop Tasering her, with her on the ground getting shocked as she yells, "I'm pregnant!"

"It's unfortunate that someone takes a tragic incident like this and starts posting it on social media", said Dorris.

The officer tried to help Turner, but she was pronounced dead at the scene, Dorris said.

This is the first shooting the officer has been involved in, according to Dorris.

Although the bystander's video has been circulating on social media and was met with huge backlash, Dorris said the officer's body cam video won't be released just yet as the investigation continues.

The officer involved has been placed on administrative leave, and an autopsy will confirm whether Turner was pregnant. Our hearts go out to the family of the deceased.

The incident is now under investigation by Baytown Police and The Harris County District Attorney's Office. "We owe it to everyone involved, including the decedent, to do a professional investigation", he said.
