Apple could buy part of Intel's smartphone modem business

Immediately after the Apple-Qualcomm deal, Intel announced that it would stop developing 5G modems for smartphones. According to The Information, Intel is still looking to sell its smartphone modem business. More recently reports from Tomshardware suggest that Apple plans to acquire German leg of Intel's modem division.

According to The Information, a bid could see "hundreds of modem engineers to Apple", offering the company a significant boost.

Swan had further stated that the company would continue to access the opportunities of 4G and 5G modems in PCs, data-centric devices, and internet of things devices.

In a statement provided to CRN, Intel said, "We have hired outside advisors to help us assess strategic options for our wireless 5G phone business".

Apple has a lengthy history of chip design, and "having more and more components under their own roof would make them more in charge of their own design destiny, timing and launches", one solution provider partner of Apple, who asked to not be identified, told CRN previously. In-house modem development and production would enable smartphone makers to avoid potential conflicts with suppliers that could derail operations, as LG's dispute with Qualcomm threatens to do. "Last year, Apple and Dialog struck a $600 million deal that brought 300 Dialog employees to Apple, along with some patents". The iPhones continued to use Infineon modems until Apple switched to Qualcomm in 2011. Infineon has been associated with making wireless chips for Apple iPhones from 2007 to 2010. The iPhone maker has also poached Intel's 5G lead engineer. The enthusiasts were hoping that the 2019 iPhone, coming this September will have 5G support but unfortunately, that is not going to happen.

Intel won't just give its modem business away, though.

However, this is not the first time the intentions of Apple for acquiring Intel has been reported.

But it seems that Apple was never really happy with Intel.

Apple hopes to develop its own modem chip and reduce its reliance on Qualcomm, but Apple technology will not be ready until a few years.
