Brailsford confirms no Tour de France for Froome following crash

Team Ineos confirmed in a statement that the four-time Tour de France victor had come off his bike during a reconnaissance of the day's ride and had withdrawn from the race.

"He's hit a wall at 60 kilometres [per hour] or something like that".

Chris Froome poses before the start of the first stage of the Tour de Yorkshire in Doncaster, England on May 2, 2019.

As well as the hospital confirming his broken femur, he also suffered a fractured elbow and fractured ribs - with a Team INEOS statement announcing the crash in Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes means he will definitely miss the Tour de France.

A message posted to Froome's official Twitter account Wednesday afternoon, apparently by his wife Michelle, said the cyclist was in surgery to fix "multiple fractures".

His Team Ineos principal, Sir Dave Brailsford, admitted it was a "very bad" crash, saying: "He was in a very, very serious condition and he could hardly speak".

Ineos staff praised the swift response from French medical teams and team doctor Richard Usher said: "I would like to commend the treatment Chris received from emergency services and all at Roanne Hospital for assessing and stabilising him".

Details of the crash and the extent of Froome's injuries remain unconfirmed.

Froome's last major win came at the 2018 Giro where he also fell while doing recon for the opening day time-trial around Jerusalem, suffering early in the three week race before spectacular late rally.

"One of our big strengths on this team is coming together in hard moments, and we will ensure we do everything possible to support Chris and his family".

Seeking a fourth win in the key preparation race, Froome was eighth in the Dauphine standings, 24 seconds behind leader Dylan Teuns of Belgium.

The 34-year-old was using the race in Roanne, France, as part of his build-up to the Tour, which starts on 6 July.
