Donald Trump Flaunts 'Secret' Migration Deal Already Revealed By Mexico

US President Donald Trump speaks with reporters as he departs the White House in Washington DC

U.S. President Donald Trump holds up a copy of a deal with Mexico on immigration and trade as he speaks to the news media prior to departing for travel to Iowa from the White House in Washington, U.S., June 11, 2019.

Mexico rejected this demand, which would have forced the Mexican government to accept numerous migrants detained trying to enter the United States by making them submit their asylum claims in Mexico rather than with USA authorities.

"We do not anticipate a problem with the vote but, if for any reason the approval is not forthcoming, Tariffs will be reinstated!" the president added.

Trump brandished a folded sheet of white A4 paper while giving a statement outside the White House, which was captured by multiple photographers. Mexican officials vowed to continue deporting Central Americans looking to reach the U.S. Thousands have already been deported, but politicians are hoping a new approach - the accelerated deployment of 6,000 Mexican National Guard troops - will deter migrants who use popular routes like the river separating Mexico and Guatemala.

Trump rightly said that was not good enough at a time when over 4,600 migrants were apprehended crossing the border each day in May. In announcing the deal, a relieved Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard said the "most important thing is that they didn't apply tariffs and we didn't experience an economic slowdown".

He has asked Congress for an emergency infusion of $4.5 billion to provide better care for the children and families surging at the border.

The president has argued not all details in his agreement with Mexico to stop illegal immigrants from crossing the border have been released yet as his way of pushing back against a New York Times report that the details between the two countries had been worked out months ago.

That's become a free pass to enter the US, with more than 60 percent of the illegal traffic last month made up of families.

According to the White House, Mr Trump decided not to launch a major trade war against its southern neighbour and key strategic ally and economic partner after Mexico agreed to increase efforts to control the flow of migrants from Central America and in particular to hold those seeking United States entry inside Mexico until their claims have been processed.

If Mexico were to be a safe third country, migrants' asylum applications would be processed there rather than in the US.

That story also notes that according to prominent Mexicans, "Mexico's new president appears to have decided that the nation has more to lose by antagonizing the United States than it has to gain despite calls from some pockets of society to stand up for Mexico".

Trump on Wednesday chided the US for having "the worst immigration laws, the dumbest laws anywhere in the world", while adding that Mexico's immigration laws were "as strong as they can be".

"If we are unable to make the deal, Mexico will begin paying Tariffs at the 5% level on Monday!" Both elements endanger the rights of asylum seekers.
