Facebook unveils 'Study' market research app, says they'll compensate participants

Facebook Logo App

Social media giant Facebook is going to launch a new scheme under which it will pay users who allow the company to access various information on their phone. The app will be used to help the company conduct market research and all participants will be paid. Users are free to leave the program, which will require uninstalling the app and notifying Facebook that they cancel their participation.

Facebook has partnered with Applause to manage its market research programme and the company will manage the registration process, all compensation to participants, and customer support.

To start with, the program is only available to Facebook users aged over 18 in the U.S. and India, and only on Android for now.

Facebook explicitly says it won't be collecting private information like passwords and card details, so that should provide a sense of security.

"Market research helps companies build better products for people".

Earlier in January, it was revealed that Facebook had been paying people to let them gain access to their phones. Facebook is not saying how much it will pay participants to share their information.

"Approaching market research in a responsible way is really important". If they qualify for it, an invitation to download the app will be sent to them.

In any case, one thing the app is sure to do is give Facebook more insight into personal data and use of not only its own services, but others as well.

The company may claim through some clever wordplay that this data it collects through Study won't be sold or used for targeted ads, but make no mistake that Facebook still plans to profit from it.

Not everyone can sign up to the system - Facebook is running ads for the program, and if you see one you can register with your information, after which Facebook will choose which applicants are eligible to download the app. Facebook is working to appear more transparent about its quests for user data with Study, though the service is not offered through Apple, which bans the collection of "information about which other apps are installed on a user's device for the purposes of analytics or advertising/marketing".

Together with the data Facebook collects about the way participants use their phones, that gives it a pretty intimate, 360-degree view of you as a consumer.
