Gary Woodland wins 119th US Open

2019 U.S. Open leaderboard, winner: Gary Woodland dominates Pebble Beach for first major victory

However, on Sunday, he stayed steady and pulled away with the US Open win.

Woodland, 35, made just four bogeys all week to win the 119th U.S. Open by three shots over defending champion Brooks Koepka.

Distance was no problem for Woodland on the 14th hole.

"I didn't have my best stuff today but I am really, really proud of myself the way I hung in there on the back nine", said McDowell, speaking to RTE Sport following his final round at Pebble Beach. I didn't know what it was, what I was going to do. Prior to that, he played basketball at Washburn University, then transferred to the University of Kansas on a golf scholarship, according to his 2005-06 player profile at KU. "Once that went in, it all came out of me". "You had to do it the right way if you were going to do it". I think it's a little bit more exciting. "I still gave myself a chance for tomorrow, which is positive".

Woodland's wife Gabby Granado suffered a miscarriage and lost one of her babies after giving birth to twins in 2017. I started the week with a fairly big position on Dustin Johnson but I'd layed that back fairly sharply on Thursday and I backed out of an in-running bet on Xander Schauffele when he started his second round tardily.

Before the round began, Woodland was warming up on the range alongside his competitors.

"The idea was to play for the win", Woodland said. All week Woodland had been preaching the importance of being able to figure things out on his own.

Woodland, who has worked hard on his short game with renowned Yorkshire coach Pete Cowen, then put the icing on the cake by holing from 30 feet for birdie on the 18th. Fantastic playing, great heart - there will be more in Gary's future!' Cool way to go out on 18, to make that bomb.

"Like I said, I wouldn't be here without my dad", Woodland said.

During the final round, Woodland made certain to slow things down by soaking in his surroundings at the stunning course.

"Being a father now puts life in perspective". He now has a victory in the PGA Championship and runner-up finishes in the Masters and U.S. Open.

" It's nice to see red numbers in a U.S. Open". Woodland's 271 total is the second lowest total in the history of the championship.

He believes it allowed him to hit one just as good on the 17th. "It took a bit of a day off".

Since winning in the Dominican Republic in March, McDowell has maintained his fine form, finishing in a tie for seventh at the Valero Texas Open and took a share of eighth place in Canada last week, which also secured his place at this year's Open. He closed with six straight pars, barely missing a birdie putt on the final hole that would have closed the gap to one stroke at the time.

Masters champion Tiger Woods shot 69 for his best round of the tournament. He looked to be on his way to a score between 75 and 80.

After a bogey on No. 12, Woodland held just a one-shot lead over Koepka.

Instead, Woods did what Woods does. He tied for 21st, 11 shots behind.

"Yeah, just keep fighting", he said after his round. He got down in 2 putts for a birdie that pushed the lead back to 2 shots. Keep grinding, keep playing. I was more nervous afterwards than I was at all today.

Woods does not plan to play any tournaments before the British Open at Royal Portrush July 18-21.

"I'm getting closer and I'm getting hungrier", he said.
